Frankie Gallagher is one of twenty children born to Nell and ex-seaman Charlie Gallagher in a deprived area of Cardiff, amid the poverty and depression that existed in the Welsh capital between the two World Wars. Wartime tragedy claims three of Nell’s sons at sea.
The surviving sons turn to crime, led by their charismatic younger brother Frankie, which inevitably leads to clashes with the forces of law and order – and policeman Dave Parker in particular.
Their feud becomes a bitter personal battle and the appearance of the sensuous Sabra eventually contains the seeds of Frankie’s own destruction.
